We invite you to one of our sister organization's most-loved annual events, featuring tours through hidden gardens of Columbia County. This year Steepletop's gardens and grounds will be included in this event. Don't miss it. Here are all the details:

Twilight in the Garden
A festive party with cocktails, food and friends in a bucolic country setting.
Breakfast & Garden Lecture
An illustrated lecture by plant specialist, Ron Kujawski. 

Self-Guided Tour 
Six private gardens in Spencertown and Kinderhook plus the restored gardens of Steepletop, the historic home of Edna St. Vincent Millay in Austerlitz.

Garden Market on the Green
This year’s market will showcase more than a dozen vendors offering plants, home and garden furnishings, birdhouses, antiques, garden books, and expert garden advice. In addition, the Garden Market will host two educational opportunities. At 12:00pm, Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener and Educator Lisbeth Karlsson will give a free talk about invasive vs. native species in the garden. At 2:00pm, Zema’s Nursery will lead a workshop on how to make your own hummingbird-friendly planter. Advance registration for participation in this workshop is required, as space is limited; tuition is $65 (including all materials). Pre-made Zema’s hummingbird planters will also be for sale.

Hiking Steepletop 

Dates: June 16; July 8; August 13; September 16; October 15
Time: 10am to 12pm
Location: The Grounds at Steepletop

Another extremely popular tour from last season is back with expanded dates. 

Description: This tour allows visitors an expanded view of the wonders of Steepletop.  The tour will include a selection of Millay’s nature poetry, much of it inspired right here at Steepletop.  We will be exploring areas of the property not included in the regular House or Grounds & Gardens tours.  Be advised that this is a hike.  We will be walking over uneven terrain, through the forest and the fields.  Some of the property may be boggy.   Please wear attire appropriate for hiking.

Meet at Tamarack Cottage Visitors Center 15 minutes before the hike begins.

For those who wish to take a tour of Millay's home afterwards, a 12:30 pm tour will be offered at a special price of $12.








Steepletop: Behind The Scenes

Steepletop:  Behind the Scenes House Tour
Time: By Appointment

Description of Tour:  This exclusive tour includes the regular tour of Millay's house plus access to the unrestored rooms not open to the public, including the Withdrawing Room with double grand pianos and the "modern" kitchen designed for a Ladies Home Journal magazine article in 1948. We will also include a private look at some of Millay’s personal accessories not seen on the regular tour. The tour lasts about one and half hours. A seperate grounds tour is included in the price.

Fee:  $50
