Musical Performance
Laszlo Slomovits and Jennifer Burd: 2pm
Laszlo Slomovits and Jennifer Burd offer “Singing Them Off the Page! — A Program of Poetry Set to Music.” Poets whose work they sing include Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost, as well as the ancient mystics, Rumi and Hafiz in translations by Coleman Barks and Daniel Ladinsky, and also some contemporary poets. They accompany their singing with guitar, bowed psaltery, and a variety of other folk instruments. For this performance at Steepletop, they will include their setting of “Afternoon on a Hill” by Edna St. Vincent Millay.
Lazslo and Jennifer will perform a 45-minute set under a tent near the Millay House. This will be their first performance at Steepletop.
Laszlo Slomovits is one of the twin brothers in the nationally known children’s folk music duo, Gemini (GeminiChildrensMusic.com).
Jennifer Burd (jenniferburd.ink) is author of two full-length books of poetry, Days Late Blue and Body and Echo, and a book of creative nonfiction, Daily Bread: A Portrait of Homeless Men & Women of Lenawee County, Michigan, and her newest, Fringe, a poetry chapbook.
Live In-The-Moment Typewriter Poetry with The Sweet Slow in Millay’s Writing Cabin: 11 am – 4 pm
Jess Bowe is a poet, storyteller, and the visionary behind The Sweet Slow, a brand and practice devoted to the art of poetic presence. Residing in the Hudson Valley, she offers live typewriter poetry, poetic writing experiences, legacy creation, and immersive creative offerings; each is designed to slow time and invite us to see the ordinary with extraordinary perception.
Jess of The Sweet Slow brings the art of live typewriter poetry to the Millay writing cabin, offering an intimate and enchanting experience where words are woven in-the-moment, inspired by a brief conversation, a single word, or a feeling shared by the recipient. Each poem is typed on cotton paper, becoming a one-of-a-kind keepsake—a tangible piece of poetry to hold onto, gift, or cherish forever.
Here’s how it works:
- Welcome to the table. Visit with Jess and share your curiosities, questions, and wonderings. Guests are invited to share a word, a thought, or a feeling. Not sure where to begin? That’s okay, too. Jess will intuitively craft something just for you.
- Watch the magic unfold. With the rhythm of the typewriter keys, a bespoke poem comes to life in real time.
- Receive your poem. In just a few minutes, you’ll hold a completely unique, hand-typed poem, written just for you. Whether playful, heartfelt, or deeply poetic, each piece is a spontaneous creation, crafted specifically for each guest, intended for timelessness and a rekindling of genuine human connection.
